Reports of electric vehicle fires might lead some people to fear the growing numbers of these vehicles will increase fire risk. In fact, replacing petrol and diesel vehicles is likely to reduce it.

New electric vehicles sold in the United States have become less expensive in the last 12 months, according to Kelley Blue Book’s latest report, with the average transaction price (ATP) of a new EV going down more than 22 percent in September compared with the same month last year.

In September, new passenger car registrations in Germany amounted to 224,502 - basically on par with the volume a year ago. During the first nine months of 2023, 2,138,066 new cars were registered (up 14.5 percent year-over-year).

Meanwhile, the plug-in electric car segment experienced a significant decrease in new registrations last month due to the end of EV incentives for business buyers. The end of some incentives also explains the rush for new electric company cars in August, when all-electric car registrations surged by 171 percent year-over-year to almost 32 percent of the total market.

In September, the total new plug-in electric car registrations amounted to 47,097 (down 35 percent year-over-year), which is 21 percent of the total volume (compared to 32.3 percent a year ago).

New passenger car registrations in France increased in September by nine percent year-over-year to 153,916, taking the year-to-date total to 1,286,247 (up 16 percent year-over-year).

In Q3, General Motors delivered 20,092 all-electric vehicles in the United States, which is 33% more than a year ago and about 3% of the total volume.

An electric car bought today will pollute less and less year after year, halving its CO2 emissions in ten years. This is regardless of where it will circulate and feed. In fact, all the main countries in the world, even China and India, have already embarked on a trajectory of abandoning fossil fuels in electricity generation. And the one used in 2033 will largely come from renewable sources. And over a lifetime, estimated at 18 years, the reduction could reach 86%.

A Pew Research Center survey of more than 13,700 adults in the US conducted in April 2021 found that, overall, 39% of those surveyed were very or somewhat likely to consider purchasing an EV, while 46% were not at all likely to consider an EV, and another 14% had no plans to purchase a vehicle.

Breaking those numbers down by how much people had heard about EVs reveals that more knowledge of EVs translates into greater consideration of EVs. Of those who reported knowing nothing about EVs, only 13% would consider purchasing one. Those who had heard a little about EVs were more than twice as likely to consider purchasing an EV as those who had heard nothing. Those who had heard a lot about EVs were the most likely to consider purchasing one. September saw plugin EVs take 63.4% share in Sweden, up from 55.2% year on year. Most of the plugin growth came from full electrics.
